Caribbean Deals: Finding Sub-$200 Round-Trip Flights
The Caribbean is one of the most competitive airline markets in the Western Hemisphere. Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, American, United, and Delta all fight for passengers on routes from the U.S. East Coast—and that competition creates extraordinary deals year-round.
Sub-$200 round trips to the Caribbean are not rare sale fares. They are available most weeks if you know the right routes, departure cities, and timing. Here is how to find them consistently.
The Cheapest Routes (Consistently Under $200 RT)
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) → San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
Typical price: $70–$120 round trip
Carriers: Spirit, JetBlue, Southwest, Frontier
Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so no passport is needed. Fort Lauderdale is the king of cheap Caribbean departures—Spirit and Frontier base significant operations there.
New York (JFK/EWR) → Cancún, Mexico (CUN)
Typical price: $150–$200 round trip
Carriers: JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, Volaris
Cancún is technically not the Caribbean islands, but it’s the same turquoise water with the cheapest flights in the region. JetBlue regularly runs $150 RT deals from JFK.
Miami (MIA) → Nassau, Bahamas (NAS)
Typical price: $120–$180 round trip
Carriers: American, Bahamasair, Silver Airways
A 45-minute flight to crystal-clear water. Weekend trips are genuinely feasible at these prices.
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) → Punta Cana, DR (PUJ)
Typical price: $130–$190 round trip
Carriers: Spirit, JetBlue, Frontier
Punta Cana’s all-inclusive resorts are popular enough to sustain heavy LCC competition from South Florida.
Orlando (MCO) → Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ)
Typical price: $150–$200 round trip
Carriers: Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue
Orlando’s position as a leisure travel hub keeps Caribbean fares competitive year-round.
When to Book
- Cheapest months to fly: September, October, early November. Hurricane season keeps prices low, but the actual storm risk on most Caribbean islands is manageable—and the beaches are empty.
- Cheapest days: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday departures are consistently 15–25% cheaper than Friday and Sunday.
- Booking window: 3–6 weeks before departure for the lowest prices. LCCs release their cheapest fares close to departure when seats are still available.
- Avoid: Christmas/New Year’s week, Spring Break (mid-March to mid-April), and President’s Day weekend. Prices triple during these peaks.
The Low-Cost Carrier Strategy
Spirit and Frontier get a bad reputation, but for a 2–3 hour Caribbean flight, they are perfectly fine. The key is understanding what you are buying:
- Book the bare fare. Do not add bags, seats, or extras through the airline. Bring a personal item that fits under the seat (most backpacks qualify).
- Check bag fees. If you need a checked bag, compare the all-in price (fare + bag) against JetBlue or Southwest, which include bags. Sometimes the legacy carrier is cheaper all-in.
- Avoid the “bundle.” Spirit’s Big Front Seat is comfortable but often costs more than a JetBlue regular seat. Compare before upselling yourself.
Using Points for Caribbean Flights
Cash fares are so cheap to the Caribbean that points rarely make sense for economy. The exception:
- JetBlue Mint (business class) to San Juan or Cancún: 16,000–24,000 TrueBlue points one-way for a lie-flat seat on a 3-hour flight. Transfer from Amex MR at 1:0.8.
- Southwest Companion Pass: If you have the Companion Pass, every Caribbean flight is effectively half-price—making $100 RT fares $50 RT for two people.
- British Airways Avios: 7,500 Avios one-way for flights under 1,150 miles, which covers FLL–Nassau, MIA–San Juan, and similar short hops.
