How credit-card transfers work

Bank reward currencies like Chase Ultimate Rewards and Amex Membership Rewards are flexible — you can convert them to airline miles or hotel points at fixed ratios, then use those miles to book award travel.

01

Earn flexible points

Spend on a Chase Sapphire, Amex Platinum, Capital One Venture, Citi Premier, Bilt Mastercard, or Wells Fargo Autograph. Points accumulate in the bank's rewards currency.

02

Transfer to a partner

Choose an airline or hotel partner and convert your points — usually 1:1, occasionally 1:2 (Amex → Marriott) or 2:1 (Capital One → certain partners). Transfers are typically instant or same-day.

03

Book the award

Use the transferred miles or points to book flights or hotel stays. A well-chosen redemption can be worth 3–15× the cash equivalent.

Frequently asked questions

Six honest answers to the questions Pointify hears most. Mounted with FAQPage schema so Google can surface them as rich results.

What are transferable credit card points?

Transferable points are flexible reward currencies — like Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards — that you can convert to airline miles or hotel points at fixed ratios (usually 1:1). Unlike co-branded miles that are locked to one airline, transferable points let you wait until you find an award seat, then move points to whichever partner books it cheapest.

How long do transfers take?

Most are instant or same-day. Chase, Amex, and Capital One transfers to most partners complete in seconds. The slowest exceptions are Amex → Virgin Atlantic (1–2 days) and Citi → Singapore KrisFlyer (occasionally 1–2 days). Always confirm seat availability before transferring — points become locked in the partner program once the transfer completes.

Are transfer bonuses worth waiting for?

Often yes, especially for premium-cabin redemptions where a 25–30% bonus saves 30K+ points per ticket. The Active Bonuses tracker on /points/bonuses surfaces every promo currently running. Watch for Chase → Hyatt (rare but huge), Amex → ANA / British Airways (frequent), and Citi → Avianca / Turkish (recurring).

How is "cents per point" (CPP) calculated?

CPP = (cash price of the same flight or hotel) ÷ (points used) × 100. Pointify's averages on this page reflect typical premium-cabin redemptions; one-off sweet spots can hit 5–15¢/pt. Anything above 1.5¢ is a strong redemption — below that, paying cash and earning points is usually the better play.

Should I transfer all my points to one program?

No. Keep them in the bank currency until you have a specific award booked. Once transferred, points are stuck in the partner program (they don't transfer back). The whole value of transferable currencies is the optionality — preserve it as long as possible.

What's the difference between buying points and transferring?

Transferring uses points you already earned through credit cards. Buying points is purchasing miles directly from an airline (with cash) — useful when an airline runs a promo (Aeroplan 50% off, Avianca 100% bonus, etc.) and the effective cents-per-point drops below the cash fare. Pointify's buy-points rate checker at /points/buy tracks active sales.

Know which program to use?
