When Does Buying Miles Make Sense?

You have a specific redemption
Only buy if you already have award space confirmed or nearly confirmed. Prices and availability can change.
Large bonus promotion active
A 50–100% bonus can cut the effective cost per mile significantly — sometimes below what credit card sign-up bonuses offer per mile.
Speculative accumulation
Buying miles to hold "for later" is risky. Award charts can devalue. Only buy against a concrete redemption plan.
When the math does not work
If buy rate (cpp) exceeds your target redemption value, you are better off paying cash or earning via credit card spend.

Redemption value is 30%+ higher than your purchase cost. Strong case to buy, especially against a confirmed award.
Redemption value roughly equals or slightly exceeds purchase cost. Buy if you have a specific redemption in mind.
Purchase cost is close to or slightly above expected value. Only worth it during large bonus promotions.
Purchase cost significantly exceeds redemption value. Earn via credit card spend or transfer partners instead.
