What actually makes Chase points disappear?

How do I keep my Chase points if I close a card?
Move them before you close. If you have another Chase card that earns Ultimate Rewards — such as the Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred — you can transfer your points to that card and they stay alive as long as at least one Ultimate Rewards-earning card remains open. Alternatively, transfer them to an airline or hotel partner, or redeem them, before the account closes.

Do Chase points expire after you transfer them to a partner?
They take on the partner's rules. Once you move Ultimate Rewards points into an airline or hotel program, they follow that program's expiration policy — which often includes an inactivity clock. That is a reason to transfer only when you are ready to book, not to speculatively park points in a program that could expire them.

Are Chase points safe if I just stop using the card?
Yes. Inactivity alone does not forfeit Ultimate Rewards points. Keep the account open and in good standing and your balance is safe indefinitely — though watch for an annual fee that may make keeping a card open worth reconsidering.
