Marriott Bonvoy issues annual free-night certificates with three credit cards: 35,000-point cert (Boundless), 50,000-point cert (Brilliant + Bevy), and 85,000-point cert (Brilliant). All three expire one year after issuance, and the most common cardholder mistake is letting a 35K or 50K cert expire because "I couldn't find a property worth using it on."
Two facts make these certs more valuable than they look: they're "up to" — you can redeem them at properties priced exactly at the cap — and Bonvoy lets you top up with up to 15,000 points to bridge the gap to higher-priced properties. A 35K cert + 15K top-up = a 50K-point night for the cost of one of your annual certs.

85K certificate — best redemptions May 2026
The 85K cert pays off when the underlying property is priced exactly at 85K (no top-up needed) and the cash rate for that night is $1,000+. Best 2026 candidates:
- The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort: 85K Bonvoy in low-season May (most overwater villa awards reset to 85K post-monsoon-season opening). Cash $2,800+/night.
- Al Maha, A Luxury Collection Desert Resort (Dubai): 85K Bonvoy in summer, includes all-inclusive meals. Cash $1,500+/night.
- The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong: 85K Bonvoy off-peak. Cash $900-$1,300/night. The skyscraper-top hotel with the world's highest-altitude rooftop pool.
The 5th-night-free stacking math
Marriott's 5th-night-free benefit applies to all award stays of 5+ nights, including stays paid for with free-night certs. So if you book 5 nights with a 35K cert + 4 paid award nights at 35K each:
- 1 night via cert: 0 points
- 4 nights at 35K each: 140K points
- 5th-night-free: 1 of those 4 paid nights becomes free
- Net: 105K points + 1 cert for 5 nights
Equivalent to 21K points/night — substantially below the 35K standalone rate. The cert effectively turns a 5-night stay into a 4-night-paid stay with the 5th night discounted.
Avoid these expiry traps
If your cert is within 30 days of expiring and you can't lock in a real trip, two recovery moves:
- Book a Marriott property near you for a one-night staycation — cancel before arrival if needed. Marriott's cancellation policy on free-night-cert bookings allows full cancellation up to 24-72 hours before arrival depending on property. Booking redeems the cert; cancelling before arrival deposits the cert back into your account with the original expiry date.
- Marriott Customer Service has occasionally extended certs by 30-90 days on request. Not guaranteed, but worth asking for elite status holders.
