Every so often a $2,000 flight shows up for $280. Not a sale, not a points trick — a genuine pricing error. These are mistake fares, and they are real. People fly to Tokyo in business class for the price of a domestic economy hop because of them. The catch is that they vanish fast, sometimes within an hour, and catching one comes down to two things: knowing what you are looking at, and being alerted before everyone else books it out.
What a mistake fare actually is
A mistake fare is a ticket priced far below its intended cost because of an error somewhere in the pricing chain. The common causes are boringly mechanical:
- Currency slips. A fare loaded in the wrong currency — pricing a long-haul as if the local currency were US dollars, for instance — can knock 80% off.
- Missing fuel surcharges or taxes. When a required surcharge fails to attach, the base fare sells naked and shockingly cheap.
- Fat-finger entry. Someone types $140 instead of $1,400 when loading a fare into the distribution system.
- Bad fare-combination logic. Two valid fare components combine into one itinerary that was never supposed to be sold at that total.
The result is the same: for a short window, a seat is bookable for a fraction of its real price — often 70% to 90% off.

Will the airline actually honor it?
This is the honest part most "deal" accounts gloss over: not always. Airlines can and sometimes do cancel mistake-fare bookings. Whether yours sticks depends on where you booked, local consumer-protection rules, and how badly the airline wants to eat the loss versus the PR hit of mass-canceling.

- US DOT rules changed. The old regulation that effectively forced airlines to honor mistake fares was rolled back years ago. Today a US carrier can cancel an obvious error fare as long as it refunds you in full and reimburses reasonable non-refundable costs you incurred in reliance on the ticket.
- It is genuinely hit or miss. Some fares get honored without a word. Some get quietly canceled with a refund a week later. Plan for both outcomes.
- The further out you book, the more exposed you are — the airline has more time to notice and cancel before you fly.
How to book a mistake fare without getting burned
You can tilt the odds in your favor. A few rules that seasoned deal-hunters follow:
- Book the flight, not the trip. Grab the fare first. Do not book nonrefundable hotels, tours, or connecting flights on other airlines until the ticket is clearly confirmed and has survived a few days.
- Do not call the airline to "confirm." That is the fastest way to flag your own booking for a human to cancel. Let it ride.
- Wait before you celebrate. Give it 24–72 hours. If the ticket is still live and the airline has issued a ticket number, your odds are much better.
- Pay with a card that protects you. If the fare gets canceled, you want a clean refund path and ideally travel protection.
- Avoid the temptation to book positioning flights that you cannot get back. If the mistake fare dies, those sunk costs are on you.
Treat a mistake fare as a high-upside, low-downside bet: worst case, you get your money back; best case, you fly somewhere incredible for almost nothing.

Why speed is the entire game
Mistake fares die for one of two reasons: the airline notices and fixes the price, or the cheap fare buckets sell out. Both happen fast. The best fares — a long-haul business-class error, say — can be gone in under an hour because word spreads the instant one is spotted.
That is why "how do I find mistake fares" is really the wrong question. By the time a deal is posted, screenshotted, and shared, the window is usually closing. The right question is: how do I get told the moment one appears on a route I care about, before it is picked clean?
How Pointify catches them for you
This is the exact problem the Pointify Travel app was built around. It watches fares across 300+ airlines and sends a lock-screen alert the moment a mistake fare or a sharp price drop shows up — so the notification hits your phone while the fare is still bookable, not after a Reddit thread has already burned through the seats.
A few things that make the alerts actually useful rather than noisy:
- They are fast. The whole point is to beat the crowd, so alerts fire as the anomaly is detected, not on a daily digest.
- They show cash and points side by side. When a mistake fare pops, you see the error cash price next to the points price on the same screen, so you can instantly judge whether to pay the (tiny) cash fare or whether points are the better play.
- They are honest about what they are. We flag these as potential error fares, not guaranteed tickets — because, as above, no one can promise an airline will honor one.
The app is free, runs on iOS 16+, and the alerts are the feature people keep it installed for. You are not hunting through forums at midnight; your phone tells you when it is worth looking.

The mindset that works
Treat mistake fares as a bonus, not a plan. Keep your calendar loosely flexible, keep your passport current, book the flight fast and the rest of the trip slowly, and let an alert do the watching so you are not refreshing fare pages all day. Do that, and a few times a year you will fly somewhere you had no business affording.
Want the alert before the fare is gone? Download the free Pointify Travel app (iOS 16+) and turn on mistake-fare and price-drop alerts. Fares and airline cancellation policies change — always read the fare rules before you book, and never book nonrefundable extras until your ticket is confirmed.
