Distance-based programs (Avios, Asia Miles, Aeroplan) charge by exact flight distance — perfect for short-haul where 7,500 miles can fly you 600 miles. Region-based programs (Turkish, KrisFlyer, ANA) divide the world into zones with one published price per zone — best for long-haul. Dynamic programs (United, Delta, Bonvoy, Hilton) move award prices with cash fares — sweet spots are flash-sale-only.
Fuel surcharges are pass-through fees the operating airline charges on top of taxes. British Airways, Lufthansa, ANA, Cathay, and Virgin Atlantic pass them through ($300–$1,000 typical). United, Avianca LifeMiles, Turkish, and Alaska do not — making them better choices for Star Alliance redemptions even when the published mileage cost is identical.
The carrier you’re booking with sets its own award chart, even on its partners’ flights. If you redeem Alaska miles on a Cathay flight, Alaska’s 70K rate applies — not Cathay’s 85K. Programs with strong partner charts (Alaska, Turkish, Aeroplan, Virgin Atlantic) are valuable precisely because their fixed partner pricing is lower than the operating airline’s dynamic pricing.
Yes, but predictably. Fixed and distance-based charts get devalued with notice once every 1–3 years (Aeroplan in 2020, Asia Miles in 2025). Dynamic programs (United, Delta, Bonvoy, Hilton) drift continuously with cash fares. We re-verify prices in this catalog at least monthly and tag the “Last reviewed” date at the top of each program.
Pointify re-verifies every redemption in this catalog at least once per month against live program search interfaces. Major devaluations are flagged within 24 hours via the deal-engine alert pipeline. The “Last reviewed” date at the top of the page is always the most-recent verification pass.
For business class to Europe: Turkish Miles&Smiles (45K one-way), Avianca LifeMiles (63K), or Aeroplan (60K with possible YQ). For first class to Asia: Alaska Atmos (70K to Hong Kong on Cathay), AA AAdvantage (80K on JAL First), or Virgin Atlantic (120K round-trip on ANA First). Mileage cost is only half the equation — fuel surcharges can flip rankings, so always compare the all-in cost.
Most yes — check the “Transfer partners” chip on each program card. Chase UR transfers to United, Hyatt, Singapore, Aeroplan, Avios, Virgin, Marriott, IHG. Amex MR transfers to Delta, Aeroplan, ANA, Asia Miles, Avios, Virgin, Hilton, Marriott. Capital One transfers to Avianca, Turkish, Avios, Cathay, Virgin, KrisFlyer. Bilt transfers to almost everything 1:1 with no annual fee.
Pointify Search pulls award availability across all 16 programs in this catalog. Confirm a seat exists before you transfer points.
