Cathay Pacific First Class is the redemption that built modern points-hacking. Six suites per Boeing 777-300ER. The Wing's First Class Cabanas at HKG (private rooms with day beds and rainfall showers). Krug, Dom, two solid weeks of crew training in fine-dining service. And — most miraculously — Alaska Mileage Plan still charges 70,000 miles for a one-way US-Hong Kong redemption in 2026, the same rate it charged in 2014. The post-merger Atmos Rewards program inherited the chart unchanged. This is the playbook.

The cabin, briefly
Cathay First runs only on the 777-300ER (registration prefix "B-K") in a 1-1-1 configuration with six suites. The seat is a 36"-wide leather chair that converts to a 79"-long lie-flat. Not a closed door (Cathay opted for tall side panels rather than full doors), but the cabin layout gives more privacy than most "true" first-class products. Bedding by Bamford Haybarn. Caviar service is Caspian Beluga (a $250 tin retail). The ground product is the actual highlight — see "The Wing" below.
Routes flying First in 2026: HKG-JFK, HKG-EWR, HKG-LAX, HKG-SFO, HKG-ORD, HKG-LHR, HKG-CDG, HKG-FRA, HKG-NRT (occasionally), HKG-SYD. Notably gone: HKG-DXB, HKG-BOS, HKG-WAS (downgraded to A350 Business in 2024).
The redemption math — Alaska/Atmos still rules
Alaska Mileage Plan rebranded to Atmos Rewards in early 2026 as part of the Hawaiian merger (full breakdown in our Atmos Rewards playbook). The Cathay redemption chart survived intact. Five programs reach Cathay First:
| Program | One-way (US → HKG) | YQ + taxes | Effective CPP at $19,800 cash |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska/Atmos Rewards | 70,000 miles | $140 | 28.1¢ |
| AsiaMiles (Cathay direct) | 110,000–125,000 | $110 | 17.7¢ |
| AAdvantage | 110,000 miles | $110 | 17.9¢ |
| British Airways Avios | 140,000 Avios | $510 | 13.8¢ |
| Qantas Frequent Flyer | 108,000 points | $130 | 18.2¢ |
Atmos Rewards at 70k for a $19,800 cash fare = 28.1¢/point. There is no other redemption on Earth that consistently delivers that CPP. For perspective: Pointify's redemption-charts tool shows the median premium-cabin CPP across 30+ programs is 4.2¢. Atmos-Cathay First is ~7× the median.
Funding the points: Atmos Rewards earning paths
Atmos Rewards has fewer transferable bank-points partners than KrisFlyer or Avios. The realistic 2026 paths to 70,000 miles:
- Bilt Mastercard — 1:1 to Atmos. Rent-paying earnings. Pointify's Bilt page tracks current Rent Day promos.
- Marriott Bonvoy — transfers to Atmos at the standard hotel-points-to-airline ratio (typically 3:1 with a +5,000 bonus per 60,000 transferred).
- Bank of America Alaska Visa — co-brand card with periodic welcome-bonus promotions and direct earning on spend.
- Buy Atmos points — Atmos has historically run buy-points bonuses several times per year. At the top promo tier, effective cost-per-point can drop substantially. Pointify's buy-points tracker alerts when Atmos runs a buy-points promo.
Note: Atmos Rewards is not a transferable partner of Amex MR, Chase UR, Citi ThankYou, or Capital One. The transfer doesn't exist.
Citi Double Cash — 2% on everything
No annual fee. Pair with a Premier for full ThankYou transfer access.
Bilt Mastercard — earn points on rent
No annual fee. Transfers 1:1 to United, Hyatt, Alaska Atmos, more.
The Wing — the real reason to book
HKG's "The Wing" First Class lounge has private cabanas: 8 enclosed rooms with a day bed, full bathroom with rainfall shower, vanity, and an a-la-carte food order tablet. They're free to use for 1–2 hours and bookable on arrival via the lounge concierge. The Long Bar serves Krug; the Haven sit-down dining room serves a five-course Cantonese menu.
The Wing's competitors at HKG (the Pier First, the Deck) are nice; the Wing's cabanas are unique in commercial aviation. They're also the fastest-booked premium amenity at any hub airport — request the cabana the moment you arrive.
Availability
Cathay First is six seats per 777-300ER, deployed on a subset of long-haul routes. Saver inventory is tight system-wide. Cathay typically releases inventory at schedule-load (~T-360 days) and may release additional seats closer to departure on routes with weak forward bookings. Less-popular routes (HKG-CDG, HKG-FRA) tend to have more saver inventory than the most-popular routes (HKG-JFK, HKG-LAX).
Pointify indexes Cathay First availability via the Cathay airline page, which combines AsiaMiles, Atmos, AAdvantage, and Qantas FF inventory. Filter by "First Class only" and use a flexible date window.
How to book it via Atmos Rewards
- Confirm availability. Search atmosrewards.com (formerly alaskaair.com) for First Class on your dates. The booking engine shows Cathay inventory natively.
- Pre-stage the points. Bilt transfers are instant; Marriott takes 1–7 days; buying points takes ~30 minutes. If using Marriott, transfer ahead of search; if Bilt, transfer at booking.
- Apply the routing rules. Atmos awards allow one stopover per one-way ticket. So US → HKG → BKK on a single 70k Atmos ticket gives you a stopover in Hong Kong. Same price.
- Call Atmos to ticket. Online ticketing of Cathay partner awards has been spotty; calling the Atmos elite line (or hold time on the regular line, ~25 min average in 2026) reliably tickets it.
- Book the Wing cabana. Email Cathay First Class concierge 48 hours out to pre-request a cabana on arrival.
Routings that maximize the 70k
One Atmos ticket (US → HKG) with a stopover doesn't add cost. Some legendary uses of the routing rule:
- US → HKG (stopover) → SIN, BKK, or KUL. Same 70k. Full Cathay First first leg, Cathay Business second leg.
- US → HKG (stopover) → DPS (Bali). Same 70k. Pair with our Bali playbook.
- US → HKG (stopover 4+ days) → ICN (Seoul) → home. 70k+70k = 140k for a multi-week Asia trip in Cathay First/Business throughout.
Traps
- The 5,000-point routing fee trap. Stopovers used to be free; in 2024 Atmos started charging 5k extra for some stopover combinations. Verify before transferring.
- Aircraft swap. Cathay rotates A350-1000 (no First) onto traditionally First-equipped routes during low season. Verify the equipment T-30 before transferring or buying points.
- Buying points without availability confirmed. Atmos buy-points bonuses don't refund if you can't find a seat. Always confirm inventory first.
- Calling without a routing. Atmos phone agents will book the cheapest itinerary; if you want a specific stopover, give the exact flight numbers.
How Cathay First compares to peers
Cathay First is widely regarded as a top-tier first-class product and is among the most accessible by points cost. Singapore Suites (see our Singapore Suites playbook) is the spectacular A380 alternative at much higher mileage cost. Air France La Première (see the La Première playbook) requires Flying Blue Platinum/Ultimate status and is hard to access. Lufthansa legacy 747-8 First (see our Lufthansa playbook) is bookable on partners but Lufthansa releases inventory close to departure. Cathay's combination of cabin quality, ground product (The Wing's cabanas at HKG), and Atmos accessibility makes it one of the most useful first-class redemptions in the points game.
Bottom line
Cathay First via Atmos Rewards at 70,000 miles is one of the best premium-cabin redemptions still available in 2026. The mileage cost has held steady through Alaska's rebrand to Atmos in early 2026, and the cabin product (with The Wing's cabanas at HKG) remains exceptional. Bilt and Marriott are the realistic transfer paths for non-Alaska-Visa holders; buy-points promos are an additional funding option. Verify the exact rate on atmosrewards.com before transferring miles, and confirm the aircraft type T-30 days before flying (Cathay rotates A350 onto some traditionally-First routes during low season — A350 has no First).
